About Kelly O’Hara and Copy Goals

I’m Kelly O’Hara, founder of Copy Goals, and content marketer for SaaS and B2B tech companies.

In case you’re interested, I thought I’d share my journey so far with you…

Getting Started in Marketing

After uni, I started working as a link builder for the SEO team at a local digital marketing agency. It’s safe to say I had a knack for this kind of work. I learned a lot, quickly.

Not to blow my own trumpet too much (typical Brit here)… But I also achieved a lot in a short period of time. I created a viral infographic about vaginas that made the rounds on the Internet (lol). Which, naturally, made the client, and the agency I worked for, very happy.

But, the digital agency couldn’t hold onto me.

Like most people that decide to leave the 9 to 5, I wanted to make my own schedule and have the freedom to do some traveling. Which I did! Highlights include a month drinking sangria in Barcelona and an interrailing trip across Europe.

I can’t say I found myself. But I did find out one thing… Turns out I’m crap at taking selfies in Paris, Krakow and Rome:

Freelancing: The Early Years

In the early days, I got a lot of inspo from people like Tim Ferris and Pat Flynn. But I really learned how to make a freelance career in writing work from Bamidele Onibalusi at Writers in Charge – it’s a good place to start, if you’re thinking of going freelance.

I ended up doing a lot of writing and editorial work in the lifestyle, entertainment and women’s niches. Through this work, I developed the creative flare and sense of fun that I still bring into my writing today.

But, eventually, I decided that I didn’t want to write about my personal life or what kind of jeans celebrities are wearing etc. anymore… It’s awks and not as fulfilling or challenging as working with up-and-coming businesses.

Over the years, I’ve also taken a bunch of copywriting and link building gigs from agencies, working with B2B and B2C clients. I’ve written about anything and everything, from cybersecurity to real estate to coworking spaces to air conditioning systems *fun*.

Starting Copy Goals

A couple of years ago I decided to get back to the core of what I enjoy doing and what I’m good at, which is content marketing. That’s why I started Copy Goals.

I like working with B2B tech and SaaS companies because of the intellectual challenge – you never get bored learning about new software and tech.

Plus, I like the idea that I’m doing work that means something. Obviously, I’m no Michelle Obama or anything… But, I am helping brands and marketers learn and grow. Which is cool.

To Infinity and Beyond...

Over the past couple of years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a number of top SaaS brands and big-name marketing blogs. But, you may not have heard of me until now because I’ve mostly worked as a ghostwriter.

That’s about to change.

Of course, I hope to continue to work with great clients and industry leaders. But, I also want to grow my personal brand and my blog. I want to share my expert knowledge of content marketing and its sister topics.

I’ve got big plans. And I’m looking forward to sharing updates with you.

Gettin’ Personal

Like I said, I don’t write articles about my personal life anymore… Mainly because it’s not that interesting. But, I’m happy to share a few details with you, so you know I’m not just a marketing robot.

*meep morp zeep*

I’m currently based in Greater Manchester, UK. Yes, that’s where all of the best football teams and musicians come from.

I love to read. Though, I didn’t quite make my GoodReads Reading Challenge quota this year. Wish me luck for 2020!

I’m also an avid fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race. I love watching Drag Race stars and local queens perform live. I can’t begin to tell you how much fun drag shows are.

My dream trip would be to travel to various spots around the world to visit mates that live or are traveling elsewhere.

So, that’s me in a nutshell…
